
Hamill Industries visited NANBIOSIS Unit 7 at IBEC, merging art and nanotech through the Ciència Radical program to inspire new audiovisual creations.
Barcelona, march 2025. Last week, the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) had the pleasure of welcoming the renowned visual artist collective, Hamill Industries, as part of the Ciència Radical artistic residency program. This initiative, co-organized by IBEC, the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), IFAE, ICFO, and ALBA Synchrotron, aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists and artists, exploring radical science through audiovisual works.
During their visit, Hamill Industries explored several cutting-edge research laboratories, including MicroFab & Microscopy Unit (Unit 7 of NANBIOSIS) located at IBEC. They engaged with state-of-the-art nanofabrication and bionanocharacterization technologies available at the Microfabspace and the Microscopy Characterization Facilities within Core Facilities of IBEC. This interaction allowed them to gain valuable insights into the intricate world of nanoscience and nanotechnology, inspiring their creative process.
About NANBIOSIS Unit 7: MicroFab & Microscopy Platform
Unit 7, hosted at IBEC, is a key research Unit dedicated to the fabrication and characterization of micro and nanodevices. Under the leadership of Prof. Josep Samitier (Scientific Director), Dr. Isabel Oliveira (Technical Coordinator), and Dr. Teresa Galán (Scientific Coordinator), this platform provides access to a 150m² class 10,000 cleanroom space and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.
This cutting-edge facility supports academic and industrial researchers in areas such as nanobioengineering, BioMEMS, materials science, tissue engineering, optics, and biomaterials. Services include the design, development, and analysis of microfluidic devices, nanostructured surfaces, and other advanced technological applications, making it a crucial hub for scientific innovation in Catalonia.
